23rd March, 2008 saw the world premiere of my maiden animation films ‘Ghatotkach’ and ‘Prahlad’ on Star Gold. Writing for animation films and that also for the children is not an easy job, this I realized as I started writing the script. After writing and re-writing again and again I managed to come close to what was desired for a script to appeal to the children. How far I have succeeded is still to be seen.
Before venturing into writing and directing animated films, I had written scripts on various genres ranging from Thriller to Romance. But the target audience was adults. The dialogues spoken were easily understood by the adults but the kids might not find it so simple to understand, so I had to change my mindset and learn how the children spoke in real life and
yet maintain the feel of mythology.
But in today’s world when fantasy is being bombarded on the minds of children through films and television programs, writing pure mythology would again become a barrier in attracting the minds of young children. So in ‘Ghatotkach’ fantasy was incorporated and little Ghatokach was made vulnareble and we traced his young days as he gets rid of his fears and becomes a hero in the great battle of Mahabharata!
The animated world is such that anything and everything can happen in it and I am still learing project after project how to create a world around every story that will be loved and enjoyed by both kids and adults alike.
The objective of these animation films is not only to entertain the children but also to introduce them to our mythological and historical heroes in such a manner that they can relate to them and gain wisdom from the stories.
When the world is looking up to India in various fields it is upto us to create interest of the world not only in modern India but also in its mythology. Let the world’s children know the mythological heroes and villians that we believe inhabited our land. And what other way than through animation!!!
